clear offer, no small print and not "too good to be true". If it obeys these 3 rules then I might actually consider it

The discount or coupon could be for something I've never tried but would only grab me if I already frequent the place. I wouldn't go out of my way to use a coupon for something I'm not familiar with. i.e. food samples at the grocery store - you haven't invested anything to try it and if you don't like it, all you have to do is spit it out!

A non-franchised coffee shop I frequent gives away a free coffee to one person an hour. They start counting customers as soon as they open and pick a number. When that number customer comes in, they make a big deal about the winner. Afterwards the number is posted on a board and sometimes they've taken polaroids of the winners. I like the idea that I might be the lucky one to get a free $3.00 coffee some day.

Have my account information at the register to receive discounts or special offers so that I don't have to carry a coupon or card to be swiped. Not enough room in my wallet for all those coupons and cards.
