I think the majority *do* believe in evolution. It's the vocal minority who are spouting the 'Intelligent Design' theory (Which the vatican refutes, but the way).

They think that evolution is "only" a theory - rather an proven fact. They don't understand that all scientific knowledge is provisional, is "only" a theory. And that science's central mechanism is to judge, with the best tools available, which current theory is the best one.
