There are a lot of definition problems here. A good idea would be to DEFINE success, failure and goals. But each of those definitions have different meanings to everyone. There are of course social standards that you could compare yourselfe to (eg. 'the averige JOE').

It is necessary to have a definition, but you can define it without a goal. If your definition of success was "rich`, but it wasn't your goal to become rich, you could still win the lottery and therefore by your definition be "successful."

In an open society self motivation with goals focuses success, necessity is the mother of invention in other dire cases. I guess it depends on your convictions and the basis of those convictions. It is like looking at the forest from the trees.
