listen for catchy lines when you are on te train, restaurant, bar etc (ie a pickup line or a put down) weave a song around it.
9.
Most of the above focus on lyrics, but so many listeners are drawn first to the rythm, the beat, the tempo and the melody. Without this it's just reciting poetry, which might be good, but most people won't get to the lyrics if they don't like the melody aspects. Most people hear music first, words second.
8.
Listen to the music you like and learn to play it and sing it. Then find out where they were influenced, and learn that music. Then find out where they were influenced, and learn that. The only way to get good at music is to do it over and over, and the way to sound cool and original is to do stuff that nobody else is doing, like, say, stuff that went out of style seventy years ago. If your influences are roots and not filtered, your music will be more pure. Most music goes back to old American country and rock 'n' roll... listen to people like Chuck Berry and Hank Williams. They were influenced even further back by folk singers like Woody Guthrie and Leadbelly and bluesmen like Son House. Also listen to classical music because it is so close to other music, just done differently. Lastly, KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING. Learn the theory behind chords and progression, rhythm, and melody. Learn major, minor, pentatonic, and blues scales. Learn common forms and progressions like 12-bar blues and I-IV-V. Blues, espeically, is so easy to write songs over, and nobody realizes that it's totally a formula. For words, just write down where you go and what you do for a day and say it to music, or when you're sitting somewhere, describe what you see around you to music. That gets you used to phrasing words to fit with music. If you want to actually write down a song, keep all of this in mind, and then just write out what you're thinking about. It'll be cool.
7.
Create a new concept. For example, take a classic song such as 'Yesterday' and using the same melody write a lyric that is an update on the sad events. Or keep the lyrics and write an upbeat melody
