understand syntax, and how the computer actually works. Learn a simple language, which is forgiving, well documented, and gives you helpful error messages. I'd suggest PHP (www.php.net, good community, loads of source code available) or Python (www.python.org, simple and clear source code). Both are scripted languages, and supported by most operating systems. Once you've learnt one the others become much easier. [almost 14 years ago]
